Frequently Asked Questions/Triathlons

I noticed you are a USA Cycling Coach but not USAT. Why?

I started as a USA Cycling Coach due to my bike fitting business and being more familiar with their program. It is now a matter of time to become dual certified.

What is your background in triathlon?

I have completed two Ironmans, several half-Ironmans, and many Olympic and sprint distance races.

How do you know how to coach triathletes?

First is training, race experience, programs provided by USAT and friends that are well-known triathlon coaches. There are many crossovers with cycling and triathlon; for example, training for weaknesses/race strengths, balancing pace/effort hold true for both sports.

I notice you are a USA Cycling Power Training certified coach. Do you require the ability to measure power/pace to be one of your athletes?

I do not. I have coached many athletes successfully without a power/pace meter. However, if you are truly committed to improvement I highly suggest putting a power/pace meter on your wish list.

How do you decide what kind of workouts would be in my program?

As part of my initial evaluation of you as an athlete I have you do a series of tests that are related to racing. They allow me to develop an individualized Power/Pace Profile. This is the basis of your program, along with your previous experience and time of the season.

I noticed you do not offer any online programs. Why?

There are some decent online programs. However, all them are based on assumptions or the developer’s past experience. I firmly believe that to truly be of service to the athlete, I need to create programs designed personally for you and be getting one-on-one feedback from you.

Do you use a periodization-type program?

Yes. Triathlon lends itself very well to periodization. An athlete's periodization is usually based on their one or two key events for the season.
